British Values

The Department for Education states that there is a need “to create and enforce a clear and rigorous expectation on all schools to promote the fundamental British values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty and mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs.”

At Chantry Community Primary School these values are reinforced regularly and explicitly through Personal, Social, Health and Emotional (PSHE), Religious Education (RE) and through planning and delivering a broad and balanced curriculum.

British Values form the core of our ethos and are threaded throughout. For example; we expect our children to show respect for all cultures and we promote positive attitudes towards other people. We aim to develop children’s confidence and encourage them to respect the ideas, values and feelings of others.

We provide opportunities for our children to understand how a democracy works, such as through our School Council, Council representatives are elected through a voting system by all children in each class from Year Two to Year Six and through our annual Chantry’s Got Talent competition.

Our Behaviour Policy provides an opportunity for us to teach children about the Rule of Law, all children are aware of our Golden Rules and are involved in developing their own set of classroom rules. This provides an opportunity for pupils to discuss the need for rules and how they help us to grow and develop as citizens. Our children are encouraged to make choices in the safe environment we provide, whether this is a choice about challenge in the classroom, choices about how they record or present their work or choices about extracurricular activities.
